Simplifying the Business

Baggage Improvement Program (BIP)

Mishandled baggage is a US$3.8 billion dollar problem for the industry – every year. It also affects 42 million passengers annually and is the second most important factor in having a pleasant trip, according to the 2009 IATA CATS survey.

The Baggage Improvement Program (BIP) provides the industry with solutions that address all causes of baggage mishandling. BIP will bring these solutions to 200 airports around the world between now and 2012. When implemented, BIP solutions will save the industry US$1.9 billion every year.  For more information, click on the links to the right.

Why IATA?

IATA’s Simplifying the Business program is able to bring about change because of its ability to create industry-wide standards and its focus on a mutually beneficial approach for everyone involved – one that results in industry-wide action.

Through its efforts on RFID, the Simplifying the Business team understands the baggage challenges facing airlines and airports. The ET, BCBP and CUSS projects have added to StB’s understanding of airports and the unique challenges they face. The BIP Team also benefits from IATA-wide experience. For example, the ISAGO initiative focuses on an audit of ground operations.
